What is Autism?
Autism, or formally denoted Autism Spectrum Disorder, is marked by significant impairments with regards to: socialization, communication, and a diminished battery of interests and activities. Parents will generally find diminished eye contact, lack of facial expressions (including difficulty in reading the non-verbal communication of others), little interest in forming friendships, preference of solitude or “aloneness”, and failure to respond to parents voices.
What to do about it?
As with any challenge, the sooner you start the better.
A team oriented approach, with a best practices paradigm in mind, often yields the best results. A child’s pediatrician is often the best starting place and ancillary services often provide the needed assistance to help put the child in the best position to succeed.
